Fire crews respond to unauthorized fire in Gillies Grove

The May 2 incident in the old-growth forest is a reminder of what's at stake in one of Ontario's rarest woodlands.

Arnprior firefighters were called to Gillies Grove on Saturday, May 2, at approximately 6:00 p.m. for a report of an unauthorized outdoor fire in the old-growth forest, according to the Town of Arnprior.

The stakes here are hard to overstate. Gillies Grove is one of the last stands of old-growth forest in eastern Ontario, home to towering white pines that predate the town itself. Open-air burning in Arnprior requires a permit, and the Grove — tinder-dry underbrush beneath irreplaceable trees — is exactly the kind of place a careless fire becomes a catastrophe.

The takeaway: burn permits are available through the Town of Arnprior, and the Grove is never the place.
